The Inventors hit the big time!

It’s not every 11 year-old who has their name on the front of a best selling children’s novel, but that’s the reality for Jamie Webb from Norwich . His new celebrity status has come about via The Inventors, a hit novel with hints of sci-fi and lots of adventure, which he wrote with older brother, Alexander Gordon Smith.

We’ve got a fantastic interview with both authors, which we did shortly after The Inventors was published in April this year. Their success came about via a competition run by Waterstone’s bookstores, called The Wow Factor, to find a great new writer of teenage fiction. The judges on the competition panel included Fern Britton and Philip Schofield of TV’s This Morning, and they handed Alexander and Jamie the second prize! Publishers, Faber, loved the book and it led to a publishing deal.

Without giving too much away, The Inventors is about young inventors, Nate and Cat, who win a scholarship to study under the world’s greatest inventor, Ebenezer Saint. It seems like a great opportunity, but it turns out that the pair will need to have their wits about them if they ever want to see their families again. As with the best eccentric geniuses, Ebenezer is not what he seems…

As well as the interview with the Inventors boys, we’ve also got copies of the book to give away – just go to the Win! section and enter your details. First names out of the WordMavericks hat get the books!

You can also download the first chapter of The Inventors from Jamie and Gordon’s official website, www.gordyland.com

The latest interview is with Alexander Gordon Smith & Jamie Webb

The Inventors is the first collaboration by half-brothers, Alexander Gordon Smith (Gordon to his mates) and Jamie Webb. Jamie is only 11, and so this novel is his first real attempt at professional writing. Gordon, however, is 17 years older than his brother, and has already established his own publishing company, Egg Box, which is now run by someone else. He studied English Literature at university and has since written two books about creative writing, and been a regular contributor of stories to The X Files and Scooby Doo magazines. Thanks to the success of Nate, Cat and Ebenezer, Gordon and Jamie are working on their second novel now. We were lucky enough to catch up with them for an interview, which we think you’ll agree is pretty entertaining stuff!
